“Suddenly an angel appeared among them, and the landscape shone bright with the glory of the Lord. They were badly frightened, but the angel reassured them. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I bring you the most joyful news ever announced, and it is for everyone! The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born tonight in Bethlehem!” – Luke 2:9-11 Living Bible.
Christmas, one of the most celebrated seasons globally, is often misunderstood and diminished by traditions and religious dogma. The real purpose of this season has been overshadowed by misconceptions, leading many to miss its true essence.
Dr. Myles Munroe famously stated, “When the purpose of a thing is not known, abuse is inevitable.” This explains why Christmas has often been misused or misunderstood. Many approach this season ignorantly, failing to understand its divine purpose.
Is Christmas Only for Christians? Think Again!
As a child in a Christian household, I believed Christmas was exclusively for Christians. However, after surrendering my life to Christ and diving deeper into God’s Word, I realized that this perspective was incorrect. Christmas is not just for Christians; it is a celebration for the entire world! The Scriptures reveal that Christmas is for all humanity because every person born into this world is born into sin and in need of the Savior (Romans 3:23, Acts 4:12).
Christmas: The Most Joyful News Ever Announced
Dr. Luke, inspired by the Holy Spirit, meticulously documented the birth of Jesus in his gospel:
“Don’t be afraid! I bring you the most joyful news ever announced, and it is for everyone! The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born tonight in Bethlehem!” (Luke 2:10-11, TLB).
This joyful news is for everyone because Jesus, the Savior, came to liberate humanity from the punishment of sin—eternal separation from God (Romans 6:23). No one else can save but Jesus (Acts 4:12 New Century Version).
The Liberator and Supreme Authority Has Come
The Voice translation of Luke 2:11 captures the profound truth: “Today, in the city of David, a Liberator has been born for you! He is the promised Anointed One, the Supreme Authority!” Christmas is not about the lights, trees, and decorations but the celebration of the arrival of the Lord Jesus, the Light of the World (John 8:12), the true light who gives light to everyone (John 1:9 NLT).
Christmas Is Not About Santa or Gifts, but God’s Ultimate Gift
The commercialization of Christmas often shifts focus to Santa Claus and material gifts. However, Christmas is the celebration of God’s greatest gift to humanity: “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). Jesus is the ultimate gift—the Liberator, the promised Messiah, and the Supreme Authority.
The True Purpose of Christmas
As you celebrate this season, remember that Christmas is not about lights, decorations, or festivities. It is about celebrating the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ, the only one who can save and liberate us from sin. “I am the Light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life” (John 8:12).
Let the celebration of Jesus fill your hearts and homes with joy, hope, and purpose. Merry Christmas to you and your dear family!
Love you all. Have a blessed week and Merry Christmas!
