“Growth doesn’t come from observation—it comes from participation.” — Isabell Bowling.
Stacy and her 8-year-old, Angie, are glued to their books while her friend, Monica, and Monica`s daughter, Tina, were locked in a phone scrolling marathon.
Monica finally asks, “Stacy, how do you get your daughter to read with all these distractions?” “People do what they see” was Stacy`s response emphasizing that children do what they see rather than what they are told.
This is the Law of the Picture by Dr. John Maxwell in practice. When leaders model the way, followers mirror their behavior—and succeed.
Stacy has a simple system: Always Have A Book and Always Read A Book.
Author and speaker James Clear said, “Habits are the compound interest of self-improvement.” And as Jim Rohn taught, “Discipline is not restriction, it is liberation.” President Abraham Lincoln said, “Discipline is choosing what you want most over what you want now.”
The truth is that making your growth a priority is what will motivate you to choose growth over comfort, and this can only happen when you become clear about where you are going. Most people are not lazy; they are only unclear about where they are going. Jim Rohn said, “When you know where you`re going, discipline becomes a gift and not a burden.” Discipline will lead to habit and habit will lead to consistency which will translate into growth.
I used to carry a book everywhere…and not read it. My Vietnamese barber noticed this habit one day and asked, “Are you still reading this book?” This continued for a while until one day I switched books to quiet him, but my conscience got loud even after the barber became quiet after seeing me with another book. That was the moment I chose to make my personal growth a daily priority. But how do I go about it? [To be continued next week].
